Bio

Heleno de Souza Campos Junior (Heleno Campos) is an Assistant Professor in the Systems Engineering and Computer Science Program (PESC) at COPPE, Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), and a postdoctoral researcher at the Institute of Computing of Fluminense Federal University (UFF), with a CNPq fellowship. He holds a D.Sc. in Computing from UFF (2025), an M.Sc. in Computer Science from the Federal University of Juiz de Fora (UFJF, 2018), and a B.Sc. in Information Systems from IF Sudeste MG, which included a sandwich year at the University of Pisa, Italy.

His research investigates how artificial intelligence can support software engineering tasks and how to improve that support. One line of work examines how agents based on large language models (LLMs) make decisions during development tasks, and how they compare with one another and with other automated approaches. He also evaluates and improves support for software configuration management, and proposes new approaches to software testing. His Ph.D. thesis, on search-based merge conflict resolution, was among the three best theses of the Software Engineering Thesis Contest (CTD-ES) in 2026. He has published in ACM Transactions on Software Engineering and Methodology, Information and Software Technology, and Software: Practice and Experience, and received Distinguished Paper Awards at the Brazilian Symposium on Software Engineering (SBES) in 2022 and 2026. He serves on the program committees of SBES and the International Symposium on Empirical Software Engineering and Measurement (ESEM), and reviews for IEEE Transactions on Software Engineering and Empirical Software Engineering.
